A pilot project tests LED tubes with sensors in a tunnel and demonstrates an energy-saving potential of 91%.
Lighting study: 91 % energy savings without loss of comfort.
In collaboration with the Swiss Federal Office of Energy and the Zurich electricity utility, LEDCity tubes were installed for the first time in several subways in the city of Zurich and a lighting study was carried out. Prior to the realisation of this project, all light sources burned continuously and had to be completely replaced every 18 months. Switching from fluorescent tubes to LED would have brought a small improvement, as both the service life is longer and the power consumption is lower. LEDCity’s tubes also light up continuously for the well-being of passers-by, but 97 per cent of the time at a dimming level of 20 per cent – only at full power when a passer-by is actually present. The result: 91 per cent of energy can be saved – without sacrificing comfort and safety. 30 per cent of the 100 passers-by surveyed were rather neutral about the result of the retrofit – i.e. they did not notice any difference – and 70 per cent were very positive.
