Economical lighting solution

When it comes to sustainable decisions for companies, the role of lighting is often overlooked. Yet intelligent lighting concepts can save large amounts of energy.

The transformation of the former production site in Zurich’s Manegg district as part of the Greencity project is a remarkable example of how lighting can be taken into account. This site was transformed into a sustainable and urban neighbourhood with a focus on lighting, among other things. The Zhil residential development opted for a lighting solution from the Zurich-based company LEDCity, which not only contributes to the sustainability of the neighbourhood, but also to improved economic efficiency thanks to high energy savings and low maintenance costs. Overall, the owner of the property saves 60% on energy consumption compared to modern LED solutions.

Simple installation thanks to integrated sensors

When planning a new building project, the question of the optimum lighting solution often arises – and this question should not be neglected. This is because the possibilities of energy-efficient lighting solutions now extend far beyond light. If you opt for the supposedly simple solution with LEDs and motion detectors, you quickly reach the limits of the system. Many components have to be installed, cables laid and everything linked and adjusted. This is not only particularly time-consuming, but also costly and inflexible.

The LEDCity system used in the residential complex is characterised by decentralised, integrated sensor technology and short run-on times. This eliminates the need for complex wiring of switches, motion detectors or other devices. With this approach, the light only switches on in areas where people or vehicles are moving. The operating time is significantly reduced. Thanks to the “True Swarm Intelligence” function, the light sources communicate with each other and pass the detection on to their network. In this way, the light precedes the movement of a person so that light is available in the surrounding areas in good time. This means that residents do not have to do without a sense of security.

Flexible customisation with remote access

The flexibility and adaptability of the lighting system to different areas of the building and the needs of the occupants are necessary in order to increase energy savings while maintaining the same level of comfort. In addition, the lighting is distributed throughout the building, providing comprehensive sensor data on the movement of people, CO2, defective light sources, energy consumption and much more. This makes it easy for property customers to request energy reports and use them to verify their energy savings and also to carry out possible optimisations of the lighting for further energy savings.

The savings and opportunities of this project clearly show that the consideration of lighting within the ESG criteria is of crucial importance. Innovative lighting solutions can not only achieve ecological goals, but also realise economic benefits. It is therefore crucial to consider lighting as an integral part of a holistic ESG approach and utilise innovative solutions to shape a sustainable future.
